Implants aren’t guaranteed to last a lifetime. The best way to ensure longevity and minimize complications is to have a board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Tenley K. Lawton, perform your procedure. She will provide you with a comprehensive postoperative care plan to reduce your chances of scarring, infection and other complications.
If you’ve already had a breast augmentation performed by another surgeon and you’re experiencing sensory changes or breast pain, you may want to consider breast implant removal or replacement. At her practice in Newport Beach, Dr. Lawton can handle the removal or replacement of your implants and help you achieve the look you want.
Medical Reasons for Implant Removal or Replacement
From mild discomfort to more serious medical concerns, there are a number of reasons patients may want to have their implants removed or replaced.
Regardless of implant type, preventing infection is essential. Any surgery comes with the risk of infection, and breast augmentation is no different. If your incision site isn’t properly cleaned and cared for, during or after surgery, you may be at risk for an infection. Signs of infection include skin necrosis, nipple discharge, breast discomfort, or slowed wound healing.
Hardened scar tissue around one or both implants, also called capsular contracture, can cause tightness, pain, and tenderness.
If a silicone implant ruptures, common symptoms include:
- Hard knots
The silicone gel will often stay inside the implant or surrounding tissue because of its thickness. You may not notice a decrease in breast size for some time.
Non-Medical Reasons for Implant Removal or Replacement
Many women who have breast implants may decide to have them removed later. Patients who are starting a family and don’t want to breastfeed with implants may seek a removal procedure. In some cases, a patient is no longer happy with the current size of their implant. Other than medical necessity, lifestyle changes are among the most common reasons patients seek implant removal.

What is Breast Implant Revision Surgery?
Breast implant revision surgery is a procedure that reverses breast augmentation by:
- Removing implants and replacing them with new ones
- Revising the shape and size of implants
- Repositioning existing implants
- Removing implants without replacement
Complications or expiration of old implants may be the reason patients decide to remove and replace their implants.
What to Expect from Revision Surgery
In either surgery, Dr. Lawton will remove your old implants as well as any scar tissue present. In an implant replacement procedure, your prior implants are replaced with a new model. You are able to stay with the same type, size and shape, or make changes. This procedure costs more than an implant removal since you’ll need to pay for the removal as well as replacement implants.
Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions carefully will help minimize your risk for infection, implant rupture, and breast cancer illness. If you notice any changes in your health or breasts, you should contact your doctor immediately.
“Dr. Lawton made me feel very comfortable from the start! Having any type of surgery can be scary, especially something you are self-conscious about. I went to her for a breast augmentation and I love my natural-looking result! She was very kind, professional, calming, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend her if you are considering cosmetic surgery. I plan to go back when I need them re-done and I live in MA! :)”*
