Breast Implant Removal and Replacement
For many people, breast augmentation can help improve confidence – but what happens to patients who are unhappy with their breast implants? Whether a victim of a bad plastic surgery procedure or no longer happy with their current implant size, breast implant removal, and replacement can help these patients achieve the look they’ve always wanted. The primary goal of breast implant removal and replacement is exactly that – to remove the damaged or outdated implant and to replace it with the kind of implant that the patient actually wants. Breast implant removal and replacement are available at board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Tenley Lawton’s practice in Newport Beach, CA.
Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Implant Removal and Replacement?
There are a number of reasons why patients may want to undergo breast implant removal and replacement surgery, which can include:
• Damaged implant
• Ruptured implant
• Implant is past warranty date
• Capsular contracture
• You are no longer happy with the current size of your breast implants
• You are starting a family and you don’t want to breastfeed with implants
In addition to the above reasons, the best candidates for breast implant removal and replacement are healthy individuals (non-smokers) who are 21+ and have realistic expectations for the outcome of their procedure.
How is Breast Implant Removal and Replacement Performed?
The breast implant removal and replacement procedure is very similar to a breast augmentation surgery. The surgical session takes about two hours to perform; during the first part of the session, Dr. Lawton will remove the old implant. She may also remove any scar tissue that could impact the placement of the new implant (especially in cases of capsular contracture). During the second part of the surgery, Dr. Lawton replaces the old implant with the new one. In most cases, incisions will only be made along the old surgical scar lines, so you won’t have to worry about additional scarring.
Breast Implant Removal and Replacement Recovery
For the first week, patients will need to rest and recover; it’s recommended that you sleep in a reclining chair, and have someone at home who can help with making meals. You won’t be able to lift anything, so mothers with younger children will need to plan for in-home childcare.
You should be able to return to work after the first 1 to 2 weeks. Patients are advised not to exercise until 3 to 4 weeks into recovery. Dr. Lawton will work with you to develop a personalized recovery plan.
