Breast reconstruction for breasts that have been surgically removed due to breast cancer or other disease is one of the most rewarding procedures, says Newport Beach board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Tenley Lawton.
Breast reconstruction surgery is performed on women who have had their breasts surgically removed due to breast cancer or some other disease that requires a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. New medical techniques and devices have made it possible to reconstruct a breast that resembles the shape and appearance of a natural breast.
Most women who have had or need to have a lumpectomy or mastectomy due to breast cancer are candidates for the surgery. Your specific procedure will be customized to your specific needs. The surgical options that Dr. Lawton selects will depend upon:
The first step is to schedule an in-person consultation with Dr. Lawton or one of our trusted providers at Tenley K Lawton M.D. in Newport Beach, CA. Simply fill out the form on this page and we will reach out to you promptly to schedule your appointment.
Dr. Lawton will explain the procedure during your consultation for breast reconstruction surgery, outlining the benefit and risks of each option. She will work in concert with your breast surgeon to ensure optimal care for you and aesthetic results that look natural and feel like they are truly a part of you. During your consultation with Dr. Lawton, you will have the opportunity to look through before and after photos of actual Orange County breast reconstruction patients but you are welcome to get familiar with some of our real patient cases by looking in our online breast reconstruction photo gallery.
For many women, breast reconstruction can and is performed at the same time as removal of the breast. When reconstruction is done simultaneously, immediately following the removal of the breast due to cancer, it is called immediate reconstruction. In these cases, Dr. Lawton works with the breast surgeon in the hospital during all phases of the surgery. When reconstruction is done at a later date it is called delayed reconstruction. With immediate reconstruction, however, a patient does not see herself without her breast or breasts and does not see any asymmetry. Many women prefer this method, but Dr. Lawton does perform both.
Breast reconstruction is not a simple procedure and sometimes requires several operations to complete a fully reconstructed breast. However, regardless of your technique and timing, by the end of your breast reconstruction journey, you will have breasts that appear similar to those you had prior to your lumpectomy or mastectomy. Together, you and board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Tenley Lawton will discuss all the options and answer all your questions during your initial and subsequent consultations in her Newport Beach office.
