Improve Your Body Contour & Reduce Fat

Liposuction is an extraordinarily popular fat removal procedure. Localized, stubborn areas of fat often frustrate many of Dr. Tenley Lawton’s patients. Liposuction is a lasting procedure to help remove pockets of fat. A female board-certified plastic surgeon in Orange County, Dr. Lawton focuses on natural results aimed at contouring the body in a safe and effective way. There are many side effects to surgeons that over-liposuction any one area. Dr. Lawton balances safety and her approach to provide a proportional profile that honors the natural curves of your body. Liposuction is an art form and must be carefully performed. You may have heard of the procedure referred to as “liposculpting.” The technique is more or less the same, however, you want to select a board-certified surgeon that is experienced in liposuction to allow a balanced final result.

What is Liposuction?

Body contouring is achieved by removing fat deposits using a cannula (hollow tube) and a suction device during the liposuction procedure. A liposuction surgeon like Dr. Lawton will insert the cannula through strategically placed small incisions and the fat cells that lie deep beneath the skin surface are removed. The length of the liposuction procedure varies (usually 1-4 hours) based on your body habits and the areas that are to be treated.

Various types of anesthesia can be used for liposuction procedures. If only a small amount of fat and a limited number of body sites are involved, liposuction can be performed under local anesthesia, which numbs only the affected areas. However, the local anesthesia is usually used along with intravenous sedation to keep you more relaxed during the liposuction procedure. Some patients may require general anesthesia, particularly if a large volume of fat is being removed.

Am I a Candidate?

The best candidates for fat removal surgery are people at a healthy weight with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in defined areas. As a female plastic surgeon and Newport Beach body contouring expert, Dr. Lawton understands the sensitivities people have about their bodies but cautions that the liposuction procedure is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle that may include lifestyle changes including weight reduction and an increase in exercise. Individuals undergoing liposuction should be physically and psychologically healthy, and realistic in their expectations. Age is not a major consideration; however, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin.

Liposuction might be the right procedure for you if you:

  • Have deposits of fat that are out of proportion with the rest of your body
  • Have fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise
  • Are within 20% of your ideal weight
  • Are at a relatively stable weight and plan on staying that way
  • Want to remove areas of stubborn fat around the body, such as love handles or back fat
  • Have realistic expectations about what liposuction can accomplish
  • Avoid tobacco products such as cigarettes

If you are considering a liposuction procedure, Dr. Tenley Lawton, MD, will answer all your questions and address your concerns during your body contouring consultation appointment in her Orange County plastic surgery office in Newport Beach, California. Liposuction is often performed as part of a set of procedures known as a Mommy Makeover.

How Does Liposuction Work?

Fat removal surgery, or a liposuction procedure, is a highly effective technique that Dr. Tenley Lawton, MD, uses with select patients to sculpt and improve their body contouring. But how does liposuction actually work? The liposuction procedure involves the removal of unwanted localized fat deposits from specific areas of the body that do not respond to traditional weight-loss methods. Liposuction generally causes minimal scarring because the incisions involved are typically quite small (in most cases, only a couple of centimeters long). Nearly all of Dr. Lawton’s liposuction procedures are performed at Newport Beach Surgery Center in Newport Beach, CA.

During your liposuction procedure, a small incision is made in the treatment area. The incision location will depend on the area being treated and your desired final results as discussed with Dr. Lawton. Once the incision has been made, Dr. Lawton will insert a small tube, called a cannula, into the target area. By running the cannula back and forth along the treated area, Dr. Lawton is able to remove and diminish fat in a controlled and calibrated way. Modern liposuction techniques are often assisted by new developments in technology, such as ultrasonic waves or laser energy systems.

Dr. Lawton will discuss the best way to contour and sculpt to reveal natural-looking results. Liposuction is not a procedure to remove as much fat as possible—but, rather, is a tool for contouring specific areas of unwanted volume. Once that unwanted fat has been removed, Dr. Lawton will close the incision using either sutures or dissolvable stitches as the situation warrants.

Liposuction can be employed to treat varied areas of the body. That’s because the incision is usually small (and easily hidden) and the cannula is quite flexible. Because the development of fat on the body can occur in unique ways depending on the individual, the flexibility of liposuction is a valuable asset. Some of the areas most commonly treated include the following:

Abdomen: Perhaps the most commonly requested treatment involves removing fat from the belly area. Abdominal fat can be particularly stubborn, no matter how much dieting or exercise you invest.

Back: While you might not see your back every day, areas of fat can collect and roll in unflattering and troublesome ways. Getting liposuction of the back can help you feel more confident and fit.

Legs: In recent years, liposuction of the legs has become more popular. While liposuction can’t fight cellulite, it can help contour inner and outer thighs.

Chin: A double chin can be treated in many ways, including injectables such as Kybella, or liposuction.

Many patients will also seek out other areas of the body to treat with liposuction, including the arms, neck, chin, or even the knees! If you are troubled by any areas of fat that intractably adhere to your body, contact Dr. Tenley Lawton to find out if liposuction would be an effective treatment for you. Additionally, liposuction of the abdomen is often paired with a tummy tuck procedure, especially in cases where skin laxity is an issue.

Real Patients Real Stories

Results*

Once you recover fully from your liposuction, you will be able to see the transformative results. Liposuction is capable of removing a significant amount of excess volume, contouring the body by reducing areas of fat. Dr. Lawton’s Orange County liposuction patients report feeling slimmer and more fit after their procedures are completed. Many patients feel as though their transformations are finally complete. In many cases, liposuction is used to finalize work that was already begun by healthy living. This plastic surgery procedure helps patients get final transformation they’ve worked so hard to achieve.

Recovery*

In general, liposuction recovery takes roughly 2 weeks—at that point, you’ll feel more like yourself again and most swelling and bruising will have subsided. For best results, you will be given compression garments to help tighten the skin around the treated area. Each person recovers at different speeds based on individual circumstances and some patients may take longer than 2 weeks. Because everyone’s liposuction is different, Dr. Lawton will supply all of her Newport Beach liposuction patients with detailed and individualized recovery instructions to follow.
