Facelift vs. Neck Lift: Which is Right for Me?

Aging and gravity combine to inflict their effects on your lower face and neck, resulting in issues such as loose skin, deep lines and wrinkles, and drooping jowls. If signs of aging around your lower face and neck bother you, you may be wondering whether a facelift or neck lift will achieve your desired results.

What is a Facelift?

Also known as a rhytidectomy, a facelift corrects lines, wrinkles, and skin laxity affecting the lower face and jawline. This procedure lifts the skin and underlying structures for a rejuvenated, natural look. It restores your features to their youthful position and tightens excess skin to smooth wrinkles.

What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift addresses issues such as loose neck skin (“turkey neck”) and visible neck bands that are actually your separated platysmal muscles. Dr. Lawton can also use liposuction to remove excess fat and address a double chin. This process enhances the chin and jawline for a more sculpted look.

Facelift vs. Neck Lift: Which is Right for Me?

If you have sagging skin around your neck and jawline, you may wonder whether a facelift or neck lift can produce your desired results. A facelift may be right for you if:

  • Your primary concerns are lines, wrinkles, and facial skin laxity.
  • You have moderate to severe sagging.
  • You still have good skin elasticity in your neck.

You may choose a neck lift if:

  • You are bothered by visible neck bands.
  • You have a double chin (submental fat)
  • You have loose neck skin

The majority of people with significant concerns about the lower face also have concerns about the neck area. As a result, a neck lift is often combined with a facelift to achieve your goals. Combining these procedures does not increase your recovery time and provides more comprehensive anti-aging results.

What is Recovery Like after a Facelift or Neck Lift?

You can expect some soreness, swelling, and bruising in the area after either of these procedures. Most people start to feel much better after the first few days. You will usually return to work two to three weeks after a facelift, depending on the details of your procedure. We recommend sleeping with your head elevated to reduce swelling and prevent injury to the surgical area.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift or Neck Lift?

A facelift or neck lift is a definitive, long-lasting way to address loose skin and other signs of aging. Good candidates have reasonable expectations and no major health problems. Candidates typically have moderate to severe skin laxity and have not found results with non-surgical treatments. People with certain medical conditions should not have these procedures.
