Top 3 Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery

Many adolescent boys and adult men deal with enlarged breasts. This common condition can affect your confidence and keep you from enjoying the activities you otherwise would. Fortunately, gynecomastia surgery can correct this issue and restore your confidence.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement, is a common condition in men. Gynecomastia can occur due to a variety of causes. When it appears in adolescents, hormones typically play a large role. Other factors can include genetics, medications, and hormonal changes related to age or medical conditions. Excess breast volume can consist of mostly fat, mostly breast tissue, or a balance of the two.

Top Three Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery

Breast enlargement in males can have a significant impact on your life. Gynecomastia surgery has several benefits, including:

Improved Self-Confidence

Gynecomastia can impact your confidence at any age. Gynecomastia surgery can sculpt a flatter, more masculine chest if your male breasts make you feel self-conscious. You will see the difference every time you look in the mirror. Others may even notice your increased confidence.

More Style Options

Men with gynecomastia often choose their clothing carefully to minimize the appearance of their condition. After male breast reduction, your clothing options expand to include any style that suits you. Feel free to wear things that might have made you uncomfortable before.

Enjoy More Activities

Men with gynecomastia often avoid activities such as swimming that would make their condition  more noticeable. With the minimal scars usually needed for gynecomastia surgery, you can feel free to take off your shirt or engage in any activities you enjoy.

What Happens During Gynecomastia Surgery?

Dr. Lawton performs the procedure in different ways depending on the composition of the breasts. Those that contain mostly fat respond well to liposuction. Those that contain mostly breast tissue will require an excision-based approach.

The majority of people with gynecomastia will benefit from a combination of liposuction and incision. Even if your excess breast mass comes primarily from fat, you may need incisions to tighten excess skin. Dr. Lawton also uses incisions to reduce the size of stretched areolas or reposition them on your chest.

What is Recovery Like After Gynecomastia Surgery?

Plan to spend the first few days after surgery resting and healing. You will need assistance with anything that requires lifting or raising your arms. With Dr. Lawton’s approval, many people can return to work in about a week. You can start adding light exercises after two weeks, and Dr. Lawton will give you a list of activities to avoid. Healing typically takes four to six weeks.

Am I a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

Good candidates for gynecomastia surgery have enlarged male breasts that bother them. You should be in good health and have reasonable expectations. Most individuals with gynecomastia can benefit from this procedure and enjoy an improved quality of life.
