How Does Breast Reduction Work?

If you have large breasts, you may experience neck and back pain, self-consciousness, and difficulty finding clothes that fit. Breast reduction gives you smaller, more proportionate breasts and areolas. This procedure can improve your quality of life and help you enjoy your favorite activities.

What is Breast Reduction?

While many women wish for larger breasts, others find their breasts too large and cause problems. Breast reduction removes excess breast mass and skin to resize and reshape the breasts. The procedure often resizes and repositions the areolas for a more appropriate size and forward-facing position. Women often choose breast reduction due to frustration with discomfort or limitations caused by their large breasts.

How Does Breast Reduction Work?

Dr. Tenley Lawton specializes in achieving natural-looking, shapely breasts that match your body and restore confidence. Breast reduction surgery takes place under general anesthesia and typically takes two to four hours. Dr. Lawton may use one of three types of incisions, depending on your needs:

Donut

This version of a breast lift works well for women with minor loose skin and enlarged areolas. It uses two incisions along the border between the areola and the skin, where the scar will become nearly invisible.

Keyhole

This procedure allows Dr. Lawton to remove more loose skin and excess breast mass. It uses an incision around the nipple and two vertical ones down to the crease under the breasts. These incisions allow more reshaping and excess skin tightening.

Anchor

Dr. Lawton most commonly uses an anchor lift for breast reduction. This procedure uses an incision around the areola, down to the breast crease, and along the crease. This gives her the maximum ability to reshape and decrease the size of your breasts.

What is Recovery Like From Breast Reduction Surgery?

You can expect to spend the first few days after breast reduction resting and recovering, although Dr. Lawton will recommend moving around to promote healing. Bruising and swelling will start to fade after about two weeks. Most people return to work after about a week, but those with more active jobs may need more time. Dr. Lawton will monitor your progress during follow-up visits.

Will I Have Scars After Breast Reduction?

Most breast reduction procedures will leave scars under the breasts. These may look raised and red early in the healing process, but following Dr. Lawton’s instructions will result in significant fading within three to six months. Most women who have the procedure feel that breast reduction scars are more than worth it.

Do I Need Breast Reduction or a Breast Lift?

If you have large breasts, they will often sag. This makes women wonder whether they need a breast reduction or a breast lift. Breast reduction focuses on reducing breast volume and achieving a proportionate size. A breast lift removes excess skin to reposition the breasts without addressing size. Dr. Lawton can combine the two procedures to produce smaller, more lifted breasts.
