What is Body Lift Surgery?

Losing weight is a great accomplishment, but sometimes excess skin can keep you from fully appreciating your efforts. A body lift removes loose skin to sculpt a slimmer, more defined figure. For many people, body lift surgery feels like finally leaving the past behind and enjoying the healthy body they have worked for.

What is Body Lift Surgery?

Body lift surgery is a post-weight loss procedure to remove excess skin. Loose skin can affect your health, self-esteem, and daily life. Dr. Tenley Lawton performs body lifts to help people complete their weight loss journey and live the life they want.

A body lift uses two long incisions around the body to remove an “apron” of loose skin and fat. With this skin removed, Dr. Lawton lifts and tightens the skin, then joints the two areas. While body lift surgery is not intended for fat removal, it may remove significant weight in loose skin and subdermal fat. Most people who have a body lift feel better mentally and physically.

What Areas Does a Body Lift Treat?

Body lift surgery usually involves the upper, middle, or lower body. The position of the incisions will differ for each person to address their loose skin issues. A body lift may address areas of loose skin, such as:

  • Abdomen and flanks
  • Lower back
  • Buttocks
  • Groin
  • Thighs

A body lift may also include liposuction in targeted areas for body contouring. Dr. Lawton will review the details of your procedure before surgery so you know what to expect.

What are the Benefits of Body Lift Surgery?

Body lift surgery provides a dramatic increase in confidence. However, it has many other benefits, including:

  • Less physical discomfort from heavy loose skin
  • More freedom to exercise or engage in activities
  • Freedom to choose your style without worrying about your sagging skin
  • Less irritation of overlapping skin areas
  • A satisfying end to a weight loss journey

Individuals considering body lift surgery should weigh all the factors involved before deciding on whether to have the procedure. Any significant surgical procedure has risks, but a body lift has life-changing benefits.

What is Recovery Like After a Body Lift?

Body lift surgery is a significant intervention that requires taking time to recover. You will have limited movement for several days after the procedure to avoid putting stress on your incisions. Each person’s healing process differs, so Dr. Lawton will assess when you can resume activities like work and exercise. Most people return to work in two to six weeks, but some may need more time. You can resume more strenuous activities after six to eight weeks.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Body Lift?

If you have loose skin due to weight loss, body lift surgery may be the final step of your weight loss. Good candidates for a body lift have no major health problems and reasonable expectations. Good candidates should be prepared to maintain their results by leading a healthy lifestyle and remaining physically active.
