Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery that adds or restores volume to breasts. As with any plastic surgery, breast augmentation involves incisions in the skin, which naturally leads to scarring. Choosing an experienced, board-certified surgeon, like Dr. Lawton, is the best way to reduce the risk of complications that may lead to scarring.
Dr. Lawton’s surgical approach aims to leave you with inconspicuously placed scars with the best chance of healing properly. Many women find that these easily-concealable scars are well worth the benefits of their enhanced breasts. Still, there are things that you can do to help minimize scarring.
What Kind of Scarring Is Normal?
In general, when patients follow Dr. Lawton’s pre and post-operative instructions, most scars may begin red and raised but will flatten in texture and blend with your natural skin tone over time. Scar lightening can take up to a year after surgery.
There are three main types of incisions;
- Periareolar – an incision around the outer edge of the areola
- Transaxillary – an incision around the underarm
- Inframammary – an incision along the lower fold of the breast
Your desired outcome, as well as the size of your implants, will help determine the optimal incision technique.
What Can I Do Before Surgery To Prevent Scarring?
The main thing you can do before surgery to prevent scarring is to follow Dr. Lawton’s individualized pre-operative instructions carefully. These instructions will take into account your specific procedure and lifestyle.
What Can Dr. Lawton Do to Prevent Scarring During Surgery?
Dr. Lawton has the skills and technique to perform precise incisions that ensure easily concealable scars. After discussing with you the three primary incision methods offered, Dr. Lawton will customize your treatment plan.

How Can I Prevent Long-Term Scarring After My Surgery?
Typically performed under general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, breast augmentation is an outpatient surgery allowing most patients to return home and begin recovery the same day.
To prevent unnecessary or long-term scarring, avoid the following during recovery:
- Heavy lifting
- Excessive exfoliating or scrubbing
- Ibuprofen and aspirin
- Tanning and prolonged sun exposure (use sunscreen even when incisions are covered)
- Over-the-counter supplements (unless cleared by your surgeon)
While it isn’t necessary to avoid alcohol consumption, it is recommended that you limit it during your recovery process.
