Are you looking to refresh your appearance and get glowing, healthy-looking skin? Do you want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars, or skin discoloration? You may be ready for a chemical peel. Chemical peels are great for patients who want to minimize wrinkles and fine lines, achieve a more even skin tone and texture, and diminish the appearance of scars. The procedure dissolves the outer layers of your skin, leaving smoother, more radiant skin in its place.
Whatever your reasons for wanting a chemical peel, Dr. Tenley K. Lawton can help you select the best peel for your desired results. How frequently you’ll need maintenance treatment will depend on what type of peel is best for you.
What Type of Peel do You Need?
Some patients may be satisfied with just one chemical peel, while others may want to address more significant signs of aging and undergo more regular treatment sessions. The type of peel you need is determined by which issues you want to address. Chemical peels may not be permanent; new sun damage and the natural aging process can reverse results. The frequency of treatments is dependent on the type of peel you need.
Light Chemical Peels
Light peels exfoliate and remove the outermost layer of the skin and are primarily used to treat the following:
- Fine lines
- Mild acne scars
- Mild sun-damaged skin
Treated areas take up to seven days to heal. Your results will continue to improve with repeated treatments. This peel is generally performed on a monthly basis for unclogging pores and maintaining healthy skin.
Chemical Peels Consultations Available
Medium Chemical Peels
Medium peels penetrate more deeply, reaching the middle and outer layers of skin, and are more effective at treating the following:
- Uneven pigmentation and skin tone
- Sun-damaged skin
- Moderate acne scars
Healing can take 1-2 weeks, though redness can last for months. To maintain your results, you may want to repeat treatment quarterly or semi-annually.
Deep Chemical Peels
Deep peels penetrate the deepest layer of skin and are designed to address more serious skin imperfections such as the following:
- Coarse or deep wrinkles
- Pre-cancerous growths
- Deep scarring
- Severely sun-damaged skin
New skin should completely cover the treated area within 2-3 weeks, but you will need to permanently protect your skin from the sun. Generally a one-time procedure, deep peels typically use phenol to achieve the most dramatic and long-lasting results.
You should expect swelling, redness, and significant peeling for the first two weeks after the treatment. Some patients may prefer to take the first week off from work, as the redness and peeling can be very noticeable.
