What’s the Difference Between Breast Augmentation and Breast Implant Replacement Surgery?

Chances are, if you’ve had a breast augmentation in the past, you’ll need to undergo breast implant replacement surgery at some point. There are many reasons that you may want to undergo a replacement from medical to aesthetic. Whether you’d like to upgrade your implants, change the size and shape, or your implants have been damaged due to a rupture, replacement surgery can help.

Your secondary surgery is very similar to that of your initial augmentation. You’ll be placed under general anesthesia while Dr. Lawton removes the old implant and any scar tissue that could impact the placement of your new implants. The process usually takes 1 to 2 hours in total. In most cases, the incision is made along the same folds of the skin and requires no additional scarring.

Dr. Tenley K. Lawton is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in breast enhancement surgeries of all types. She knows the ins and outs of secondary surgeries and is prepared to treat each case individually, quickly addressing potential complications as they arise.

On average, women choose to have implants replaced about every 15 to 20 years or so. Surgical techniques and implant types are continuously evolving. You’ll have more custom choices than your initial augmentation allowing you to get the exact look and feel you want. Opt for smooth or textured implants, choose round or teardrop, or go for a higher-profile implant. Your options are virtually limitless.

Recovery is often easier with secondary augmentations. Because you’ve already been through the process, you’ll be able to prepare appropriately. You know what helped the last time around, and what you wish you had done. Most women can head back to non-strenuous work within a week. Incorporate more strenuous activities gradually as your body heals.

Implants do not necessarily need to be replaced if they are removed. Some women choose to combine their removal with a breast lift instead. Conversely, many women opt to add a breast lift to their replacement surgery, especially when addressing loose, or sagging skin. Dr. Lawton will talk to you about your concerns, goals, and answer any questions you have before customizing your surgery.
