Where is the Incision Made During a Breast Augmentation?

For the right woman, a breast augmentation can have a dramatic life-changing effect. Women who have pregnancy or age-related volume loss can achieve fuller, younger-looking breasts. Breast surgery can also help women who are unhappy with the size they were naturally given meet their aesthetic goals.

Whatever the reason you may be considering a breast augmentation, there are a number factors that you’ll have to take into account. No two breast augmentations are done exactly the same. To achieve an optimal outcome, you’ll need to make aesthetic decisions like the type of implant you want (saline or silicone), along with what size and shape you prefer.

There are also technical questions to think about, like where the implant will be placed (above/below the muscle), and of course where the incision will be made. The incision type is usually based on your anatomy, skin elasticity, and the implant type you’ve chosen.

Dr. Tenley K. Lawton will customize your surgery and incision in a way that allows her to safely create a pocket for accurate placement of the implant. She has the skill and technique needed to ensure scars are minimal and easily-concealable. Precise incisions are also essential to minimize the formation of post-surgical capsules around the implant.

Dr. Lawton offers three incision types, each designed to ensure an optimal outcome to your specific procedure. Dr. Lawton has performed numerous successful breast surgeries throughout her career using each of these incisions.

Periareolar Incision

During a periareolar augmentation, Dr. Lawton will meticulously create an incision along the outer edge of the areola. Scars are typically easily hidden within the natural pigmentation changes. A periareolar incision is often done when a mild-to-moderate breast lift is performed at the same time as an augmentation.

Transaxillary Incision

A transaxillary augmentation is done through the crease in the armpit allowing Dr. Lawton to maneuver the implant into its final position. There is no incision or scar to the breast itself. However, when it comes time for implant removal, the same incision-site cannot be used.

Inframammary Incision

Inframammary incisions are the most commonly done. A thin 1-2 inch incision will be made along the natural crease at the underside of the breast. This type of incision offers Dr. Lawton complete visualization of the surgical field. Women who opt for shaped silicone implants will likely require an inframammary incision. No scar can be seen when in an upright position.
