What is Gynecomastia and What Can I Do to Address It?

Do you hesitate to take your shirt off or wear fitted tops because they reveal enlarged male breasts? Gynecomastia is a common, frustrating condition with many underlying causes. Fortunately, it can be corrected with a surgical procedure to give you the more masculine chest shape you want.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition in which men experience enlarged breasts. These can occur for many reasons. Hormones are a common cause, resulting in gynecomastia being very common among adolescent boys. It can also be caused by medical conditions, illicit or prescription drugs, weight changes, and genetics. Your excess breast tissue may contain mostly fat, mostly skin and glandular tissue or an even distribution of both.

What Can I Do to Address Gynecomastia?

If you have gynecomastia, your doctor may check a few factors. These will usually include your hormone levels and the medications you take. Some unusual cases of gynecomastia are caused by medical conditions that require treatment. If you develop enlarged male breasts due to medications or health conditions, they may not go away afterward.

The most effective way to treat gynecomastia is male breast reduction surgery. This procedure removes your excess breast volume and sculpts attractive male contours. Dr. Tenley Lawton specializes in gynecomastia surgery. She customizes each procedure to meet your needs and provides you with results that will make you feel more confident.

How Does Gynecomastia Surgery Work?

Dr. Lawton may use different surgical methods depending on whether you have more excess skin or fat. She addresses fat using liposuction. In this procedure, she makes a few tiny incisions in the chest area and inserts a cannula to remove the fat and flatten your chest. The incisions become nearly invisible when healed.

An excision approach is used when more significant changes are needed. Dr. Lawton uses incisions during this procedure to remove excess skin and glandular breast tissue. She will also use this approach if you would benefit from repositioning your areolas to a more aesthetically pleasant position.

What is Recovery Like After Gynecomastia Surgery?

The details of your recovery will depend on how Dr. Lawton performs your procedure. After surgery, you will wear a compression garment to support the area and limit swelling. You will usually have some discomfort and may notice bruising. Most people feel more like themselves and can return to work after one to two weeks. You can resume your usual routine, including strenuous exercise, within four to six weeks.

Am I a Good Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

Most men with enlarged breasts are good candidates for gynecomastia surgery. Candidates should not smoke and should have reasonable expectations. Good candidates have no health conditions that would make surgery unsafe. If your gynecomastia is caused by a medication or medical condition, address it to keep your condition from recurring.
