How Does an Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) Work?

Age affects every part of the body. Especially for those who have lost significant weight, the upper arm skin may start to sag and create a loose, flabby appearance. It may be time for an arm lift if you want to restore slim, toned arms.

What is an Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)?

Brachioplasty, commonly called an arm lift, removes and tightens excess skin in the upper arms. It is most often beneficial for patients with loose, droopy upper arms due to weight loss or aging. An arm lift with Dr. Tenley Lawton can correct “bat wings” and restore firm, contoured upper arms.

How Does an Arm Lift Work?

Dr. Lawton typically performs arm lifts as an outpatient procedure at an accredited surgical facility. The surgery usually takes around two to three hours under general anesthesia.

First, she will make an incision from your armpit down your inner arm. Dr. Lawton will then remove excess skin and fat, smoothing and tightening the arms before closing the incisions. If needed, liposuction may be performed to remove fat. The procedure removes loose skin and recontours the upper arms from the elbow to the armpit.

What to Expect After an Arm Lift

You’ll be sent home with your arms bandaged and drainage tubes if needed for excess fluid. These will be removed after a week. Swelling, discomfort, and tightness in the arms are normal, especially for the first few days. Dr. Lawton will prescribe pain medication as necessary and give you detailed aftercare instructions.

Patients should take one to two weeks off work after an arm lift. You should not lift your arms above shoulder height for at least three weeks. It will take approximately six to eight weeks to resume exercise and strenuous activities.

What Results Can I Expect From an Arm Lift?

Once most swelling and bruising fades after a week or two, you’ll start to enjoy your smoother, slimmer arms. The final outcome will be visible in a few months when all swelling has subsided. Many patients feel more confident wearing short-sleeve and sleeveless shirts in their newly contoured arms.

The results of an arm lift are long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight. You’ll likely enjoy your results for a decade or more. Eventually, the aging process will cause the skin to sag again, but your arms will still look better than they would have without brachioplasty.

Am I a Good Candidate for Brachioplasty?

If you are bothered by flabby upper arms, you may benefit from an arm lift. Patients with loose, sagging skin on the arms from weight loss or age are often ideal candidates for brachioplasty. Ideal candidates should be overall healthy and committed to maintaining a stable weight. During a detailed consultation, Dr. Lawton will help determine if an arm lift is right for you.
