What is the Recovery Time with a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are a non-surgical procedure designed to remove the topmost layers of dull, damaged skin. Each layer is gently resurfaced until desired results are achieved. Patients can effectively reverse visible signs of sun damage and aging. Depending on your individual needs and goals, Dr. Lawton may suggest either a light, medium, or deep peel.

Dr. Tenley K. Lawton routinely performs chemical peels for patients seeking to improve skin quality and achieve a more youthful-looking appearance. She uses medical-grade peels with proven results to increase cellular turnover and boost long-term collagen production. Whether you’re looking to minimize lines and wrinkles, fade pigmentation problems, or resolve scarring, one of the following chemical peels may a good fit for you.

Light Chemical Peel

Lighter peels provide near-instant rejuvenation with limited downtime. You can expect minor swelling, redness, and tenderness several days following your procedure. In some cases, crusting may occur for first-time chemical peel patients. Patients can start to see smooth, glowing skin in about 2-5 days after treatment.

While there isn’t much downtime involved with a light peel, treatments may need to be repeated to achieve your desired outcome. You may be a good fit for a light peel if you’re bothered by fine lines, textural problems, or minor acne scars.

Medium Chemical Peel

Medium chemical peels offer more substantial results but come with a greater recovery period. Immediately following your procedure, the treatment area will be raw, and sensitive to the touch. Pigmented lesions will start to crust after 1-2 days and gradually slough off over the next 3-6 days. While the majority of swelling typically subsides within a week, redness can last upwards of several months.

Patients can facilitate a speedy recovery and protect their new layer of skin by avoiding sun exposure. Medium peels are ideal for patients that want to significantly improve moderate signs of aging and sun damage without surgery. Most patients can get the results they want with just 1-2 treatments.

Deep Peel Recovery

Deep chemical peels are an aggressive treatment option for patients with severe concerns such as deep-set wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and scars. These types of peels are designed to be a one-time treatment option for results that last years to come.

Patients can expect significant redness, swelling, and irritation after treatment. In some cases, the eyes may be swollen shut. Ice packs and prescription pain medication can be used to minimize discomfort throughout the first several days. The majority of peeling will occur within the first 2-weeks with redness lasting several months or more.

Dr. Lawton did a wonderful job with my surgery. Her staff was helpful and caring. I was very impressed with the look of the office and even the gown you usually get in a doctors office (wrinkled green cotton)was black with gold and done in very good taste and made you feel special. I feel so much better about myself and should have had this procedure 30 years ago. You are never too old to fix something your are not happy with.
