A tummy tuck is a surgical intervention to reduce sagging skin on your belly and improve the appearance of your entire abdominal region. Recovery times, however, vary considerably from patient to patient. Contributing factors include your age, health, current body weight, and the type of tummy tuck you receive.
Tummy Tuck Downtime
Once you’ve had surgery, it is only natural to want to get on with your life as fast as you can. However, just as with any other operation, it will take time for your body to recover. Rushing back to your regular schedule too quickly could cause injury and lead to complications.
Most patients who get a tummy tuck with Dr. Tenley Lawton will stay in the hospital for a few hours to check their vitals and ensure that everything is okay. Vulnerable or special patients may require an overnight stay for further monitoring and testing, but this is typically not the case.
Before you get a tummy tuck, you should schedule time off from your everyday life, including your work and family. You will have drains in for a few days after surgery and we will show you how to empty them. We will also provide you with medications to keep your drains hygienic while they are in place.
You will also need to wear an abdominal binder – a type of compression belt around your middle – while you recover for around six weeks. This device helps to reduce swelling and fluid buildup.
You must take steps to assist healing from a tummy tuck. When you get home, ensure that you set up a comfortable space where you can meet all your needs. Where possible, avoid any strenuous physical activity that could disrupt the stitches or cause swelling.
Also, be sure to adjust your diet. Take plenty of green tea to boost immunity and eat fruits, like pineapple, that fight abdominal bloating. Dr. Lawton and the team can provide you with more specific advice on supplements and ingredients you may wish to include following your procedure.
Benefits of a Tummy Tuck
While there is some downtime associated with a tummy tuck, there are substantial benefits too. These include:
- More confidence and sense of self-worth
- Improvements in posture as a result of less stress being placed on the spine
- A significant amount of weight loss
- Less bagginess or stretch marks around the midsection and towards the panty line
- Improvements in secondary conditions, such as stress urinary incontinence

Am I a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
If you are unhappy about your stomach’s appearance, you might be a good candidate for a tummy tuck. Many people with loose skin, stretch marks, and excess skin from pregnancy choose the procedure to feel more confident and outgoing. Ideal patients should be generally healthy and able to maintain a healthy weight long-term.
