How Long Does Gynecomastia Last?
Gynecomastia is often caused by hormonal changes in men, particularly during puberty. In most cases in pubescent men, the hormones rebalance, and the gynecomastia fades within a few years.
Gynecomastia may also be caused by significant weight gain. In those cases, the condition fades after weight loss. Some may experience sagging skin after weight loss, and surgery can reduce the excess skin.
Another cause of gynecomastia is medicines. The side effects of antidepressants, chemotherapy, antibiotics, or certain illegal drugs such as heroin could result in gynecomastia. In these cases, stopping the intake of the medications or drugs should reverse the gynecomastia.
Lastly, liver disease, lung cancer, thyroid disorders, certain types of tumors, and kidney disease can cause gynecomastia. Treatment for these diseases may reduce or stop the symptoms of gynecomastia.
What is Gynecomastia Surgery?
For those whose treatments and lifestyle changes do not reduce the development of the tissue, Dr. Lawton provides gynecomastia surgery or male breast reduction surgery. There are two types of procedures: liposuction-based and excision-based. In some cases, Dr. Lawton combines the two for the best results.
Liposuction-based gynecomastia surgery focuses on fatty tissue build-up within the breasts, while excision-based focuses on the glandular and skin tissue. In some cases, liposuction may require contouring through removing excess skin.
The results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent outside of significant weight gain. During recovery, you will feel sore for a few days, but most recover after two to four weeks. You will need to wear a compression garment during recovery to reduce swelling and ensure a safe recovery.
