How Long is Recovery from Gynecomastia?

If you are planning on undergoing male breast reduction surgery, then you should know everything you can to understand the process and the recovery time in general.

It’s imperative that you follow the direction of your surgeon if you want to have the best chance of having a completely healthy recovery. You will be in pain for the first few days, and it is recommended that you have four weeks of downtime so that you can allow yourself to properly heal. That being said, most people have an average recovery time of just two weeks.

About Gynecomastia

If you are not sure if you have gynecomastia or not, then you should know that the signs can vary between having a bit of extra tissue around the nipples to having much more prominent tissue around the breasts. The tissue can sometimes be painful or tender, but this is not always the case at all. So what causes gynecomastia? It can be caused by a hormonal imbalance between testosterone or estrogen.  Being overweight can also cause gynecomastia. The main reason for this is because when you are overweight, you will produce more estrogen and you may have excess fat around the body. During puberty, hormone levels can vary. If testosterone drops, then estrogen can easily cause breast tissue to grow. Normally, when you reach the end of puberty, your body will slow down the production of hormones but this is not always the case. If your estrogen is still high then you may need to undergo hormone treatment prior to surgery.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

When you undergo gynecomastia surgery, you will have a short recovery time in most cases. You may feel sore during the first 3 days or so, but normally, the pain is minimal. If you use over the counter pain relief then you will normally find this more than sufficient. You will need to expect a recovery time of up to four weeks, but usually, most people are fully recovered in just two weeks. This of course, does depend on the extent of your surgery. Dr. Lawton has years of experience when it comes to gynecomastia surgery, and therefore can give you all of the advice you need, whether it’s your first time under the knife or whether you want to have other treatment done at the same time.
