How to Sleep After a Tummy Tuck

If you have been pregnant or lost weight, you may find yourself with excess skin and fat around your abdomen. A tummy tuck removes your loose skin and tightens your abdominal muscles. This procedure can restore your flat stomach and let you feel more confident.

What is an Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck?

The abdomen is one of the most common problem areas people struggle with when trying to shape their figure. Abdominoplasty improves the appearance of your belly by removing loose skin and excess fat. It then tightens skin and muscles for a toned, flatter appearance. Many people choose a tummy tuck after pregnancy or weight loss, but anyone with sagging skin around the stomach area may benefit.

How Does a Tummy Tuck Work?

A tummy tuck is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital or surgical facility. Dr. Tenley Lawton, a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs abdominoplasty in Newport Beach. The procedure uses an incision hidden below the bikini line. Dr. Lawton will remove excess skin and fat, repair separated abdominal muscles, and reposition the belly button for a tight, flat stomach.

Taking care of yourself during your recovery will make sure you enjoy the full results of your tummy tuck. Any swelling and discomfort during the first few days will be managed with medication. You should make arrangements to spend the first seven to ten days recovering and avoiding most activities. During the following weeks, Dr. Lawton will guide you through adding activities back to your schedule. Most people can return to work in four to five weeks.

During your recovery you will spend a lot of time resting, so your sleeping position will affect how well you heal. The ideal sleeping position is resting on your back with your upper body elevated. Since your abdominal area may feel tight or sore, you will often feel most comfortable with a pillow under your knees and several pillows propping up the top part of your body. Many people find that a reclining chair provides the ideal sleeping position and provides arms to assist you in getting up.

Liposuction or Tummy Tuck?

The choice between liposuction and a tummy tuck depends on your biggest areas of concern. Liposuction effectively removes fat with only a few small incisions and much less recovery time. However, it cannot address the problem of loose or sagging skin. A tummy tuck will remove excess skin and attached fat. Dr. Lawton may combine both procedures to sculpt and shape your abdomen.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Good candidates for abdominoplasty want to address loose abdominal skin and fat. Ideal candidates are healthy and prepared to commit to the recovery process. Dr. Lawton recommends that people planning a tummy tuck maintain a stable weight before and after the procedure.
