Breast Reconstruction

Reconstruct Your Breasts After Breast Cancer

Breast reconstruction for breasts that have been surgically removed due to breast cancer or other disease is one of the most rewarding procedures, says Newport Beach board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Tenley Lawton.

What is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction surgery is performed on women who have had their breasts surgically removed due to breast cancer or some other disease that requires a lumpectomy or a mastectomy. New medical techniques and devices have made it possible to reconstruct a breast that resembles the shape and appearance of a natural breast.

Am I a Candidate?

Most women who have had or need to have a lumpectomy or mastectomy due to breast cancer are candidates for the surgery. Your specific procedure will be customized to your specific needs. The surgical options that Dr. Lawton selects will depend upon:

  • the size and shape of the opposite breast
  • the desire to use your own tissue (autogenous) versus tissue expansion with an implant
  • your follow-up treatment course and stage disease
  • your body size
  • the availability of your own tissue
  • any pre-existing medical conditions

How Does It Work?

For many women, breast reconstruction can and is performed at the same time as removal of the breast. When reconstruction is done simultaneously, immediately following the removal of the breast due to cancer, it is called immediate reconstruction. In these cases, Dr. Lawton works with the breast surgeon in the hospital during all phases of the surgery. When reconstruction is done at a later date it is called delayed reconstruction. With immediate reconstruction, however, a patient does not see herself without her breast or breasts and does not see any asymmetry. Many women prefer this method, but Dr. Lawton does perform both.
