What Does Lumecca IPL Treat?

If you have issues with hyperpigmentation, redness, or other pigmentation concerns, one treatment stands out as an effective way to address them. Lumecca IPL uses many wavelengths of light at the same time to treat different pigment shades for clearer, more even-toned skin at any age.

What is a Lumecca IPL Photofacial?

Intense Pulsed Light or IPL is a widely used treatment to address red and brown discolorations, vascular blemishes, and many other concerns. The Lumecca IPL system uses advanced technology to make treatment quick and effective. Unlike a laser, IPL uses many wavelengths of light at the same time, letting it target different types of pigmentation. Because IPL uses light, it is often known as a photofacial.

What Does Lumecca IPL Treat?

Dr. Lawton and her team may recommend Lumecca IPL for you if you are looking for a non-invasive treatment for concerns including:

  • Rosacea
  • Vascular lesions
  • Spider veins
  • Port wine stains
  • Freckles
  • Sun damage
  • Dark spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

While a laser uses a single wavelength, the band of wavelengths used by an IPL photofacial target melanin, the pigment that causes brownish hyperpigmentation and vascular conditions that cause redness. These pigments absorb the light energy, breaking them up so your body can remove them.

What is a Lumecca IPL Treatment Like?

Your Lumecca IPL treatment usually takes about 30 minutes, although it may take longer depending on the area treated. You can opt to have cooling gel applied before treatment, which many people find to be enough, or numbing cream if you prefer, although the numbing cream takes time to work. People often describe each pulse of light as feeling like a rubber band snapped against the skin and have no trouble tolerating it.

Is There Any Downtime After an IPL Photofacial?

Because the Intense Pulsed Light does not damage your skin, a Lumecca IPL treatment does not usually require any downtime. Your skin may look red and feel sensitive for a day or two, but you can cover this with non-irritating makeup. We can recommend skincare products, including sunscreen, to use after treatment to protect your skin and help maintain your results.

Am I a Good Candidate for Lumecca IPL?

An IPL photofacial can treat a wide range of skin concerns so that many people can benefit. There is no “best age” as long as you are a healthy adult since people can develop pigmentation concerns at an early age or have them from birth. Good candidates have realistic expectations and have not been tanning or had heavy sun exposure in the past few weeks.

Individuals who have concerns about textural issues like acne scars or wrinkles may benefit more from a treatment such as Morpheus8 RF microneedling. IPL is generally not recommended for dark skin tones, but you have many other treatment options.
