If you are unhappy with your appearance or if you want to try and lose fat, then we are here to help. A lot of people get confused between a tummy tuck and a liposuction procedure, but it’s important to know that the two are actually very different.
Tummy Tuck VS Liposuction: What’s the Difference?
Some people wonder why you would go through liposuction when reducing body fat because surely diet and exercise can help you to lose weight without having to undergo a procedure. This is not the case, and sometimes diet and exercise isn’t enough for you to shift stubborn belly fat. The great thing about liposuction is that it can help you to spot-reduce any fat that you have around your abdomen. It’s ideal for those who have tried to burn fat through diet and exercise, but have been unable to do so. A tummy tuck on the other hand is a different procedure. Pregnancy and even weight loss can result in sagging skin. Liposuction can remove the excess fat that you have but it won’t have an impact on your loose skin. When you undergo a tummy tuck, or an abdominoplasty, the sagging skin will be removed and the underlying muscles will be tightened too. Dr. Lawton has many years of experience when it comes to performing liposuction and tummy tucks, and sometimes the two types of surgery can be combined to give you the best result.
Tummy Tuck Overview
Most women drop a few dress sizes after they have a tummy tuck. They have a slimmer, flatter and more fit figure overall. Some even go on to lose even more weight as a result. After a tummy tuck, it will be a few weeks for the bruising and swelling to go down, but you’ll be back to your old self in no time.
With liposuction, you can also drop dress sizes. This is a significant boost overall, which is why so many people go on to have this kind of treatment. The total recovery time for liposuction is between 2 and 6 weeks.
Tummy Tuck and Liposuction: Similarities
There are some similarities between a tummy tuck and liposuction. Both will be performed under general anesthesia, but epidural anesthesia may be an option.

Tummy Tuck and Liposuction: Differences
There are two types of tummy tuck: partial and full. Both procedures are performed under general anesthesia. A tummy tuck removes excess fat and it also involves tightening the stomach muscles. Stretch marks can also be removed. With liposuction, you will not have any excess skin removed. You will just have fat removed, as some people prefer to tone their skin with diet and exercise.
It is entirely possible for you to have both procedures done at the same time if this is something that you are interested in, so you can get the best of both worlds.
“If there’s anyone contemplating a tummy tuck & breast lift with an augmentation, I highly recommend Dr. Lawton! I brought my aunt to her after seeing my friends incredible results. My aunt lost over 100lbs & had lost all the volume on her breasts & had tons of loose skin on her tummy. I went with my aunt, who only speaks spanish, to her initial consult. She wanted to get her breasts done first, but after Dr. Lawton & Erin educated us & explained the process of doing both tummy & breasts at the same time, she booked the whole makeover! She is almost 3 months post op & looks and feels amazing! I wasn’t able to make all her appointments, but Erin was sweet enough to call me during the visit so I could translate. I can’t say enough about how amazing Erin is! She’s the best patient liaison ever! We had so many questions, more than the average person, I’m sure, and Erin was always happy to help. Thank you Lawton team for making my auntie so beautiful!”*
