A Woman’s Plastic Surgery Decision Is Her Own, Insists Orange County Surgeon
Newport Beach, Calif. – It seems plastic surgery shaming has gone to new heights. It’s no longer just the calling of entertainment tabloids but of the Vatican, too, which recently chimed in to condemn the exceedingly popular practice.
“There’s always been negative chatter,” says Newport Beach Plastic Surgeon Dr. Tenley Lawton. “Yet the people who receive plastic surgery often declare it’s the best decision they ever made. I think that says a lot more than anything the detractors could say.”
Dr. Lawton points to actress Renee Zellweger as just one example of widespread cosmetic surgery shaming.
“My patients don’t want that kind of scrutiny, and they shouldn’t have to endure even an ounce of it. Plastic surgery is an individual choice, so let’s leave it at that. There’s no need for ridicule or to assume the woman is unstable or unintelligent.
“In fact, studies show that patients, the majority anyway, go into plastic surgery with realistic expectations and emerge on the other side with better confidence and satisfaction,” says Dr. Lawton. “So why all the criticism when people are simply trying to improve their outlook on life?”
It’s not just the patients’ stories that provide a counterpoint to cosmetic surgery shaming. The numbers do, too. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recorded a 3 percent increase in procedures performed from 2013 to 2014, which saw 15.6 million minimally invasive and surgical procedures completed.
“Plastic surgery is here to stay, and it does wonders for people from all walks of life,” says Dr. Lawton. “So let’s focus on the uplifting stories of change instead of dishing out such harsh judgment. We’ll all feel better for it.”
