What is Facial Fat Grafting?

Facial fat grafting, also known as a facial fat transfer, is a surgical procedure where your own fat is used to naturally volumize your face. The fat is generally taken from an area of the body where fat is less desirable, such as the abdomen or the thighs, and relocated to your face to improve its shape. Facial fat transfer can replenish volume in your cheeks, temples, under-eye hollows, or anywhere that appears sunken or with deep wrinkles.

Am I a Candidate?

Ideal candidates for facial fat transfer should have a desire to enhance their appearance by adding volume to their face, but should also have enough fat in other areas (such as the abdomen or thighs) that can be extracted and utilized for the procedure. If you’ve had temporary treatments in the past, such as a JUVÉDERM® filler, but want a more long-lasting solution, you are most likely a candidate for facial fat grafting. Dr. Tenley Lawton will discuss your past treatments and review your fat makeup to ensure that you are a good candidate for facial fat transfer.

How Does It Work?

During your surgery, Dr. Lawton will first harvest the fat from the determined area using liposuction. Once the fat is removed, it’s put into a centrifuge where any impurities are removed and it’s prepped for transfer. Similar to the administration of a dermal filler, the fat is then injected in tiny amounts into the treatment area to ensure even, targeted delivery to the face.

While the exact time will vary depending on the area treated, most facial fat transfers take about an hour to complete.

The final results of your facial fat grafting treatment will be enhanced facial volume and an overall younger-looking complexion. You will not see results immediately since a portion of the fat will absorb into the body for the first few months after transfer. However, the real benefits begin to show about 6-9 months after surgery when the fat cells begin to grow.

Recovery*

You may experience some swelling and bruising after surgery, but this will subside after a few days. Most people go back to work about a week after their surgery.
