How Does Breast Augmentation Work?

Dr. Lawton will discuss your implant options and procedure methods during your consultation. Saline and silicone implants both make excellent choices. Saline implants can be placed through a wider variety of incision methods, while silicone implants may look and feel more natural. Dr. Lawton may place your implants through the underarm (transaxillary), around the edge of the areola (periareolar), or under the breast (inframammary). 

How Long Does Breast Augmentation Last?

While breast implants can last for decades, they are not intended to last forever. A typical implant will last ten to twenty years. Some may last longer, and some women may choose to replace them before that time. Reasons to replace breast implants include:

• Hardening around the implants (capsular contracture)
• Implant rupture
• Ripples in the implant surface
• Shifts in the position of the implants

Dr. Lawton has extensive experience with correcting implant problems. Many implants will develop these issues if left in place long enough, so they can be a sign that you need new ones. 

How Long is Recovery From Breast Augmentation? 

During the first few days, you can expect some discomfort and soreness. Dr. Lawton will prescribe medications as needed. You should start feeling more comfortable after five to seven days. Many people can return to work after this time, but you may need to wait if you have a very active job. You can resume light exercise after three to four weeks, and after four weeks, most people can return to their usual routine.
