No matter how much you protect and care for your skin, it’s nearly impossible to prevent damage over time. After all, your face is exposed every day — and the sun’s UV rays, particles in the air, even temperature fluctuations can contribute to blemishes and other unwanted issues. The answer for many of our clients is a chemical peel, a noninvasive procedure that can have a big impact on the way you look and feel.
How it works
A chemical peel is kind of a supercharged exfoliation process. We apply a solution to the skin, causing the outer layer or layers to peel off and revealing a new layer — one that typically is smoother and more uniform in color.
There are several different types of peels:
- Superficial “refresher” procedures, which treat mild blemishes and rough patches.
- Medium peels, which can improve age spots, freckles, other discolorations and even some precancerous skin growths.
- Deep peels, used to penetrate the middle layer of skin and remove damaged cells for a dramatic impact. This procedure can be performed only once.
What are the benefits of a chemical peel?
Peels are used to treat a number of different skin conditions, including:
- Aging skin
- Crow’s feet
- Sagging skin
- Sun damage
Are there any drawbacks?
Generally, chemical peels are very safe — they may sting, but the pain is mild for most patients. In rare instances, scarring may occur and skin color may change temporarily or permanently. Also, peels do require follow-up care, such as the use of lotions and creams after minor procedures; more extensive treatments require more involved care.
Who are good candidates for peels?
Chemical peels usually work best for fair-skinned, light-haired patients. Those who have skin diseases or infections, excessive broken skin or other conditions should avoid this treatment.
