Will I need to have my breast implants redone?

There are a lot of misconceptions out there regarding breast augmentation (see our “Breast implants: questions and answers”), but one that often makes women very hesitant is the notion they’ll have to have surgery every few years to replace implants.

For the vast majority of patients, that’s simply not true. When breast augmentation is performed correctly, implants should last 10 to 20 years with no complications, depending on a patient’s body and lifestyle.

Renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Tenley Lawton has been performing breast augmentation procedures for years in Newport Beach; her knowledge and skill ensures that your surgery will achieve the best — and safest — possible results.

Reasons for additional surgery
That said, women who have had breast augmentation typically do have follow-up surgeries, but only once or twice over the rest of their lives. And it’s most frequently based on personal preference instead of necessity. Because aging impacts the size and shape of both natural and augmented breasts, women often decide they want to refresh their look again after years with their original implants.

A far more uncommon reason for follow-up surgery is complications with the implants. Regardless of which surgeon performs a breast augmentation, it is true that in very rare instances, implants can leak or rupture. Again, this is very uncommon, and can be impacted by the activities and lifestyle of the patient.

The first step is to schedule an in-person consultation with Dr. Lawton or one of our trusted providers at Tenley K Lawton M.D. in Neport Beach, CA. Simply fill out the form on this page and we will reach out to you promptly to schedule your appointment.

Neither of these possibilities should keep you from having breast augmentation surgery if it is something you truly want to do. In a survey of 5,000 women who either had or were considering the procedure, only 13% of women reported that they had additional operations — and the majority of them either wanted larger implants or to improve breast shape or position.

The benefits of breast augmentation far outweigh any risks, particularly when you consider that many patients realize substantial psychological benefits along with an enhanced physical appearance.

Don’t let common misconceptions guide such an important life decision. For more information, please contact Dr. Lawton to schedule a consultation and determine if breast augmentation is right for you.
