When Should You Consider Breast Implant Replacement?

If you are unhappy with your implants or the way your breast enhancements appear, you might want to consider implant replacement. Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure that removes your existing implants and replaces them with new ones.

Implants can look great immediately after a procedure, but they have a limited shelf-life. Over time, they can migrate, deflate, harden, and develop ripples, making them look misshapen or misaligned, even if the original cosmetic surgeon carried out the procedure perfectly.

Breast implant replacement improves the shape of your breasts and corrects any issues that might have arisen since your last augmentation, giving you your confidence back.

Breast Implants Don’t Last Forever

Breast implants don’t last forever. Over time, they can develop leaks or migrate to a different position, causing your breasts to change shape or become sore.

Some women can develop capsular contracture – or hardening of scar tissue around the implant site – leading to tightness, pain, and cosmetic abnormalities. Others can experience silicone or saline rupture where the material inside the implant begins leaking out, causing uneven breasts, decreased size, swelling, numbness, and burning sensations.

Dr. Tenley Lawton recommends that you replace your breast implants every ten years or so, in line with current FDA guidance. Current fifth-generation silicone implants are most robust than previous generations and feature harder shells that don’t break down as easily in the body.

Important Questions to Consider

Before getting breast implant replacement, Dr. Lawton and the team suggest asking the following questions.

What Type of Implants Do You Have?

Implants come in a variety of types, including saline, structured saline, silicone, gummy bear, round, smooth, and textured. Some, however, are more prone to failure than others. Older generations are less robust than newer versions.

How Long Have You Had Your Implants?

Breast implants have a limited shelf life. Over time, both silicone and saline versions degrade, leading to leaks, changes in shape, or visible “rippling.”

When considering breast implant replacement, consider how long you’ve had your existing implants. If you’ve had them for more than ten years, replacement should be considered.

Benefits of Breast Implant Replacement

There are many benefits of breast implant replacement with Dr. Lawton.

  • Improvement in breast symmetry: Correct lopsided breasts due to implant migration.
  • Fix leaks: Replace implants that might have become degraded or ruptured.
  • Get rid of rippling: Make your breasts appear smooth again.
  • Resolve scar tissue hardening: Removing an implant can become necessary if you develop capsular contracture or abnormal cosmetic changes to your breasts.

Am I A Candidate for Breast Implant Replacement?

Candidates for breast implant replacement include patients with ruptured or damaged implants, old implants past their warranty date, rippling, or capsular contracture. Women who are no longer satisfied with their current implant size can also benefit.

Patients should be over 21 and have realistic expectations for what breast implant replacement can achieve.
