What’s Better, Silicone or Saline Implants?

No two breast surgeries are exactly the same. Every woman has her unique idea on what contours she’d like to achieve. Once you’ve made the decision that you’re ready for a breast augmentation, you and your surgeon can begin to customize your procedure. You’ll decide on shape, size, along with the incision type, and where the implant will be placed.

One of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make is whether you’d like silicone or saline implants. While silicone implants are typically chosen more often, both types have advantages that may make you lean one way or the other.

Look & Feel

It makes sense that the look and feel of different implants is a determining factor for many women. While some women prefer the rounded contours of saline-filled implants, others find that silicone implants provide a more natural appearance and texture. Both implants come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

Length of Scar

Scars from either type of implant should be easily concealable. However, silicone implants require a slightly larger incision because they are pre-filled. Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution to desired fullness at the time of your surgery.

Cost

Cost should never be the reason you opt for one implant over another. That being said, silicone implants are often more costly due to the expensive nature of the material. Silicone implants also undergo rigorous safety standards which play a role in how much you’ll pay.

Risk Factors

In the case of a rupture, saline implants can safely absorb into the body without potential complications. Identifying a rupture with silicone implants is more difficult and can cause problems down the line and may need to be removed. Women who have silicone implants are encouraged to undergo regular image screening to detect a possible rupture.

Saline implants have a greater chance of ‘rippling’ over time. Dr. Lawton will often place saline implants below the muscle to minimize this occurrence.

Saline implants are FDA-approved for women 18+. You should be 21 or older before getting a breast augmentation with silicone implants.

Still unsure? Don’t worry. Dr. Tenley Lawton has performed hundreds of successful breast surgeries and will be available every step of the way. She can provide guidance based on your body type and your desired outcome. Dr. Lawton can help you achieve an optimal outcome whatever decision you make.
