What Not to Do After Liposuction

If you have areas of stubborn fat that do not respond to your efforts, you might think you have no choice but to put up with them. Fortunately, you can sculpt those challenging areas with liposuction. This procedure can shape your figure to achieve your desired contours.

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure that uses small incisions to insert a cannula that breaks up targeted fat and removes it. Dr. Tenley Lawton performs numerous liposuction procedures every month. She focuses on achieving a desirable shape, not just fat removal. Liposuction can provide long-lasting, sculpted results in your most difficult areas that have not responded to attempts to remove them.

How Does Liposuction Work?

During your liposuction procedure, Dr. Lawton will make a few small incisions and insert a cannula. The cannula breaks up fat deposits and removes them from the body. These fat cells will not regrow after the procedure, but the remaining fat cells can enlarge if you gain weight. The procedure may include technology such as ultrasound or laser to assist with breaking up fat cells for maximum results.

What Not to Do After Liposuction

How quickly you recover from liposuction depends on several factors, including your overall health, your surgeon’s technique, and how well you follow your aftercare instructions. Here are some recommendations for what to do and not do after liposuction:

  • Even if you feel sore, make sure to move around regularly
  • Do not allow yourself to become dehydrated
  • Avoid taking blood-thinning medications like aspirin and other NSAIDs
  • Do not stop wearing your compression garment
  • Avoid soaking in water such as bathing or swimming (you can shower)
  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities till Dr. Lawton gives her approval

Most people with generally inactive jobs can return to work after one week. Dr. Lawton will monitor your progress during follow-up appointments and instruct you when you can safely return to normal activities.

What are the Alternatives to Liposuction?

Certain areas and aesthetic concerns may respond to another treatment better than liposuction. In areas with significant loose skin, Dr. Lawton may recommend a lift. This procedure lifts and tightens the skin, which liposuction alone cannot accomplish. If you struggle with your abdominal area, you may benefit from a tummy tuck. This procedure removes excess skin and fat to create a flatter, smoother stomach.

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Good candidates for liposuction want to address areas of difficult fat and achieve a slimmer, more sculpted figure. Ideal candidates have achieved a stable weight and want to target problem spots. Liposuction should not be considered a weight-loss procedure. We recommend that liposuction patients be in overall good health and have reasonable expectations.
