What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Up to 50% of all men will develop enlarged breasts at some point in their lives. Despite being common, gynecomastia is often surrounded by myths and misinformation. Gynecomastia surgery treats enlarged male breasts for a more masculine appearance. This procedure removes excess fat and breast tissue for a flatter, smoother chest.

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia or male breast enlargement can happen for a variety of reasons. Gynecomastia that develops during puberty results from rapidly changing hormones. The condition has a strong hereditary component, and can also be caused by certain medications or medical conditions. Your enlarged breasts can contain mostly breast tissue, mostly fat, or an even distribution of the two. Dr. Tenley Lawton has extensive experience treating gynecomastia and achieving a pleasing, masculine shape.

What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery can reduce the size of enlarged male breasts. Dr. Lawton performs different types of gynecomastia surgery depending on the type of tissue that makes up your breasts. Many male breasts contain a large amount of fat, and liposuction can remove this with a few small incisions. If Dr. Lawton needs to remove breast tissue or excess skin, she may use a procedure called an excision. She may also use this procedure if she needs to reposition your nipple and areola to achieve a better shape.

How Much Does Gynecomastia Surgery Cost?

Since gynecomastia surgery is a customized procedure, all prices are provided as estimates. The cost of this procedure depends on factors such as:

  • Where you live
  • Your surgeon’s skill and experience
  • The type and complexity of the procedure
  • Associated costs and fees

The average cost of gynecomastia surgery is about $4,200. However, this does not include expenses such as medications, anesthesia, post-surgical care, and other costs. We recommend a consultation for a more accurate estimate.

What is Recovery Like From Gynecomastia Surgery?

You can expect to feel some swelling and soreness for a few days after your surgery. Most people can return to work within two weeks. Your individual healing process will depend on the type of surgery you have. Larger incisions will need more time to heal properly, and you will have more soreness after a more extensive procedure. You can resume your usual exercise routine and other activities within about four weeks.

Am I a Candidate for Gynecomastia Surgery?

You may be a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery if you feel self-conscious about enlarged male breasts. Ideal candidates are in good health and have reasonable expectations. If you are bothered by your male breasts, surgery can remove the problem and restore your confidence.
