What Does a Chemical Peel Do?

Customizable and ranging from gentle to intense, chemical peels treat everything from lines and wrinkles to hyperpigmentation and acne scarring. By treating moderate to severe signs of aging, chemical peels can keep skin looking youthful and rejuvenated.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

A chemical peel breaks down and removes the dull, lifeless outer layers of the skin. This allows new, brighter, and more youthful skin to emerge. Chemical peels give people smooth, rejuvenated skin faster and with fewer treatments than many more technologically advanced treatments. Dr. Lawton can discuss whether a chemical peel will help you meet your goals.

Dr. Lawton can customize your chemical peel for your skin’s individual needs. More gentle peels remove fewer layers of skin, and people have less downtime afterward. However, people may need more treatments to see results. More intensive peels can leave the skin recovering for a longer time, but they remove more layers of skin, creating faster results.

How Often Should I Have a Chemical Peel?

Light chemical peels make an excellent monthly rejuvenation treatment, and results continue to improve over time. Medium peels may take two weeks to heal, with redness visible for a month or more. Patients often repeat this treatment a few times a year.

For deep, intensive peels, you will require two to three weeks for new skin to cover the treated area. Redness may be severe for the first week and will continue for a month or more. These deep peels often only need one treatment to achieve lasting results.

What Results Should I Expect From a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels can improve many skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Acne scarring
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Dull skin tone
  • Enlarged pores

Is There Any Downtime From a Chemical Peel?

A light chemical peel may leave you with some redness and irritation for up to a week. Most of this resolves within two to five days, allowing results to become visible. With a medium peel, you may experience crusting over and shedding of hyperpigmented areas and redness that can last up to a month. With a deep chemical peel, you should expect swelling and discomfort significant enough to require ice packs and prescription pain medication. Most of the peeling happens within two weeks, but redness can persist for months.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Because Dr. Lawton can customize chemical peels for every need and skin type, almost anyone can receive a chemical peel. During your consultation, Dr. Lawton will examine your skin and determine what type of peel might work best for your skin concerns. Not every peel is suitable for everyone, but Dr. Lawton has a peel that will work for you.
