What are Dermal Fillers and How Do They Work?

Dermal fillers add volume to the face and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Several materials have been approved for use as dermal fillers, but the most popular ones contain hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers allow people to replace volume where it has been lost and to add volume to enhance their features.

What are Dermal Fillers?

While there are many types of dermal fillers available, Dr. Lawton and her team offer the Juvéderm® family of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers because we feel that these provide the best results for our patients.

Hyaluronic acid occurs in the skin, where it acts to attract and bind moisture. Because the body recognizes this material, it will not reject the filler. Although all Juvéderm® products contain hyaluronic acid, they contain different forms with a variety of properties. This ensures that we have a Juvéderm® filler for almost every part of your face:

Juvéderm® Voluma

Using a dense hyaluronic acid gel, this dermal filler adds volume to the mid-face area, especially the cheeks.

Juvéderm® Vollure

This filler works on the nasolabial folds, the deep creases that run from the corner of the nose to the edge of the mouth, also called smile lines.

Juvéderm® Volbella

Designed for the lips, this filler has a much softer and thinner texture, making it flexible and natural-looking.

Juvéderm® Ultra

This filler works especially well for lines in delicate areas such as around the mouth, letting people maintain all their natural facial expressions.

Juvéderm® Ultra Plus

Used to correct deep nasolabial folds and other deep facial wrinkles, this filler has the right consistency to stay in place and support these areas.

An “XC” after the name of a Juvéderm® dermal filler means that it contains lidocaine, a numbing agent that makes each shot more comfortable.

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Most members of the Juvéderm® family last between six and twelve months. Fillers in active areas like the lips and around the mouth often get metabolized by the body faster than those in areas like the cheeks.

What is the Difference Between Botox® and Dermal Fillers?

These two types of injectables work in very different ways. Instead of adding volume to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, Botox® acts on the muscles that create lines and wrinkles to make them relax. Both are effective in reducing lines and wrinkles, but dermal fillers are more versatile in their uses.

What are the Benefits of Dermal Fillers?

The greatest benefit from dermal fillers comes from the immediate boost in self-esteem people feel when they look younger and more rejuvenated. People also like dermal fillers because they allow people to avoid more invasive procedures with maintenance only once or twice a year.
