Saline Vs. Silicone Implants: Which is Best for Me?

Women who are considering breast augmentation with implants have two main options -saline and silicone. Every woman is unique so when it comes to what’s right for you, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Both saline and silicone implants come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and profiles to meet your aesthetic goals.

Dr. Tenley K. Lawton understands the eccentricities associated with both types of implants and has performed hundreds of breast surgeries, all with successful outcomes. Whether you’re looking to regain pre-pregnancy breasts, increase the cup size you were naturally given, or undergoing breast reconstruction surgery following cancer, Dr. Lawton can produce life-changing results.

Although the type of implants you choose is often based on personal preference, there are several factors that may push you towards one direction over another. Today, we’ll go over a few of the pros and cons of each to help jump-start the decision-making process.

Saline Implants

Both saline and silicone implants are comprised of an outer medical-grade silicone shell. It’s what’s on the inside that makes all the difference. Saline implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution (saline) after placement. Implants are filled after placement allowing for a smaller incision making visible scars less prominent.

Because saline implants have a tendency to ‘ripple’ over time, Dr. Lawton often positions them submuscular (below the breast muscle) for a more natural look and feel.

If a leak should occur, The saltwater solution is not harmful to your body. Breast augmentations with saline implants are FDA-approved for patients 18+.

Silicone Implants

Many women find the look and feel of silicone implants to be more appealing. The semi-solid gel moves more naturally than saline especially when placed above the muscle. Women with limited breast tissue may be better suited for silicone implants.

Silicone implants are prefilled by the manufacturer. They undergo a rigorous inspection process to ensure they are FDA-compliant in every way. Although silicone implants can be more costly than saline, most are backed by a device has a lifetime warranty. 10-year warranty includes financial assistances towards replacement surgery and bilateral product replacement should they rupture within the first 10 years.

A slightly larger incision is needed for the placement of silicone implants. Silicone implants c will need to be replaced if a rupture is detected. . Women are encouraged to examine their breasts so they will know if any changes occur. Usually a rupture can be detected by mammogram or ultrasound. An MRI is often utilized in cases where it isn’t definitive on other methods of testing. Breast augmentations with silicone implants are FDA-approved for patients 22 and older.
