Below the Muscle

Submuscular augmentations (under the muscle) are the most common choice among women. Many feel that below the muscle augmentations give a more natural contour -especially for thinner patients with limited breast tissue. The muscle acts as a stabilizer for the implant. With a below-muscle augmentation, the chance for rippling is reduced due to added pressure from the muscle. The surgery does require a bit more surgical skill and requires separating the muscle from the underlying rib cage. Recovery time can be longer and less comfortable than an above the muscle procedure.

Above the Muscle

Although it’s not the most popular choice, having an above-the-muscle augmentation has its advantages as well. Women with thick, firm breast tissue can benefit from the less-invasive procedure. Some patients find an above augmentation both looks and feels more natural when chest muscles are flexed because the breasts don’t flatten or move laterally.
