Is Botox® Safe?

If you have lines or wrinkles on your face, you might be considering Botox®, one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available. At the same time, however, you may worry about its safety. In this post, we discuss what Botox® is and its excellent safety record.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a proprietary name for an injectable muscle relaxant called botulism toxin. The chemical comes from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria, and it has the almost unique ability to prevent the activation of muscles in the face. Dr. Tenley Lawton carefully uses it to relax facial muscles so that lines, wrinkles and furrows on the surface appear reduced.

Botox® works by inhibiting acetylcholine, the chemical which transfers information along nerves to the brain. Once administered, the brain no longer sends signals to the small muscles that underlie the face, preventing them from tensing up and creating visible furrows. This results in the decreased appearance of dynamic wrinkles, leading to a youthful and smooth face.

Is Botox® FDA-Approved?

Botox® received FDA approval all the way back in 1989. Since then, cosmetic surgeons have used it in millions of procedures, both medical and aesthetic. Today, it has among the best track records of any cosmetic intervention available on the market.

Botox® Safety

Patients often worry about the safety of Botox® because of its name and where it comes from. However, cosmetic injections are overwhelmingly safe, especially when carried out by an experienced doctor, such as Dr. Lawton and her team of expert nurse injectors.

There are some small risks and side effects that accompany Botox® injections. However, these are extremely rare. They include headache or mild flu-like symptoms, swelling or pain at the injection site, and/or eye dryness.

It is very unlikely that Botox® fluids will leave the face and spread to the rest of the body.

Benefits of Botox®

Botox® offers patients some tremendous benefits.

  • Quick treatment: Application of Botox® only takes a few minutes. Once done, you’re able to go about the rest of your day as normal.
  • Reduced lines and wrinkles: Botox® can target lines and wrinkles on multiple areas of the face, including furrows on your forehead, brow, crow’s feet area and nasolabial area.
  • Lasting results: Botox® typically lasts for around three to four months before your body processes it and removes it from the face. Many patients, therefore, create a Botox® schedule, getting multiple sessions throughout the year to keep their levels topped up. If you like, you can always take a break from Botox® and come back to it at a later date.
  • Non-invasive: Lastly, Botox® is an incredibly safe procedure because it does not involve any cutting or suturing of the face. There is no recovery time or downtime.

Am I a Candidate for Botox®?

Good candidates for Botox® are patients who would like to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. You should not receive Botox® if you have an allergy to botulism toxic, neuromuscular disease, allergy to human albumin or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
