How to Sleep During Breast Augmentation Recovery

If you want larger, fuller breasts, you may have considered getting breast implants. Breast augmentation ranks high on the list of most popular plastic surgery procedures. Your results often hinge on how well you care for your healing breasts during recovery, so make sure you follow all your surgeon’s recommendations, including how to sleep.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation uses implants to enhance the shape and size of the breasts. The procedure can provide results including:

  • Larger breasts with more volume
  • More symmetrical breasts that match each other in shape and size
  • Improved breast shape with more volume where you want to see it

Whether to have breast augmentation is a deeply personal choice. Dr. Tenley Lawton will help you decide if the procedure is right for you

How is Breast Augmentation Performed?

During breast augmentation, Dr. Lawton places saline or silicone implants into a pocket created behind the breast tissue or muscle. Both types of implants use a silicone shell but contain different materials and give you different results.

You will feel nothing during the surgery since Dr. Lawton performs breast augmentation under general anesthesia. You will see minimal scars with incisions hidden in the underarm area, around the areola, or under the breast. You will wake up in the recovery area and usually return home the same day.

In the weeks after breast augmentation surgery, the healing process can determine your final results. You will need to avoid putting pressure on the breasts or disturbing the healing tissue. Dr. Lawton will give you instructions based on the type of procedure and implant you have received.

The first step is to schedule an in-person consultation with Dr. Lawton or one of our trusted providers at Tenley K Lawton M.D. in Neport Beach, CA. Simply fill out the form on this page and we will reach out to you promptly to schedule your appointment.

After the procedure, you should sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated. This will improve healing, keep your breasts in a natural position, and reduce swelling and discomfort. You will also receive a surgical bra to hold your breasts in the correct position. Most people can return to work after one to two weeks. Dr. Lawton will tell you when you can return to more physical activities.

What Results Will I See With Breast Augmentation?

After your breast augmentation, you will immediately see fuller, larger breasts. The final shape will take up to six months to develop as healing continues. Most people prefer a breast size that enhances their figure without looking unnaturally large.

If you have a significant amount of sagging or loose skin, breast augmentation by itself may not achieve your desired results. A breast lift, often performed with breast augmentation, removes excess skin to raise, tighten, and reshape the breast. It also restores the areola to a more normal, outward-facing position.
