Breast implants are made to last, but not forever. While you can expect to keep your implants for many years, eventually, you may want or need to replace them. Patients come to see Dr. Lawton for implant replacement for a wide variety of reasons.
Most silicone and saline implants can last from fifteen to twenty years before they need replacement. However, many women choose to have their implants replaced before this, either because they have developed a problem with the implant, because they no longer feel happy with the implants they have, or because they want to take advantage of new breast implant technologies for better results.
If you suspect that you may have an issue with your implants or want to talk about replacing them, schedule a consultation with Dr. Tenley K. Lawton, an expert in breast augmentation and revision procedures.
Implants do get old, and this can cause side effects like hardening or a rippled texture of the implant. These are signs that your implants may be approaching time for a replacement. New implants can provide you with the softness and appealing texture that your previous implants had when new. You may see even better results due to improvements in implant technology.
Many women choose to have their breast implants replaced because the shape or size no longer suits their self-image or makes them happy. Fortunately, women replacing their implants can choose from a wide variety of options that can provide more projection, upper fullness, and natural feel than older implant technology.
Recovery from implant replacement surgery will feel similar to the original procedure. In many cases, Dr. Lawton will use the same incisions to avoid any new scars. Most people can return to work after about one week and resume most normal activities after two to four weeks.
If your implants show signs of hardening or rippling, or if you want your breasts to look different and want to try a new type of implant, you may be a good candidate. Patients should have no serious health issues and should speak to Dr. Lawton during consultation about any issues with past breast surgeries.
You can expect that your new implants should feel more natural and free or rippling. Whether you approach surgery wanting more upper breast fullness, more forward projection, or a different breast shape, Dr. Lawton will choose the right implant to give you the look and feel that you want.
