How Can You Reduce Gynecomastia?

Enlarged male breasts are far from rare. Over half of all men will experience it at some point in their lives, especially during puberty. Gynecomastia can make you self-conscious and affect your ability to pursue the activities you enjoy. If you want to reduce your enlarged male breasts, gynecomastia surgery can restore a flatter, more masculine chest.

What is Gynecomastia?

Men can develop enlarged male breasts for a variety of reasons. Causes of gynecomastia include genetics, hormonal changes, and certain medications. The enlarged breasts may contain mostly fat, mostly skin, or a combination of the two. You may also have glandular tissue contributing to your gynecomastia. Dr. Tenley Lawton will base her surgical procedure on the type of gynecomastia that affects you.

How Can You Reduce Gynecomastia?

You can reduce your gynecomastia with a surgical procedure. The details of the procedure depend on the composition of your enlarged male breasts.

Liposuction-Based Gynecomatia Reduction

If your enlarged breasts consist mainly of fat, Dr. Lawton may use a liposuction-based procedure. Using a small cannula, she will suction out the excess fat. Incisions are one to two centimeters long and will become almost invisible when healed. The skin will often tighten once the fat has been removed.

Excision-Based Gynecomatia Reduction

Liposuction cannot address skin or glandular tissue, so Dr. Lawton may perform an excision-based procedure if your gynecomastia involves these. Details will vary with the type of tissue and your desired results. If your gynecomastia has changed the shape or size of your nipples, an excision-based surgery can relocate and resize them.

How Much Does Gynecomastia Surgery Cost?

Each gynecomastia surgery is a customized procedure, so that costs will vary widely. The average price of liposuction nationwide is $4,123. This will vary depending on your location. Experienced surgeons who perform gynecomastia procedures regularly may charge more. The estimate does not include anesthesia, surgical facility fees, and support garments. An excision-based surgery is more complex and usually costs more than a liposuction-based one.

What Results Will I See With Gynecomastia Surgery?

You will notice immediately that your chest looks flatter and more masculine. You will have some swelling after surgery that will keep you from seeing your final results. Most swelling will fade within two weeks. You may need to wait a few months for residual swelling to disappear before your chest settles into its new appearance.

What Is Recovery Like From Gynecomastia Surgery?

You will have a compression garment to wear after surgery. This garment protects and supports the area in the correct position while it heals. Most people can return to work after about two weeks. You will need to wait up to four weeks before resuming light exercise and six weeks or more for more intensive workouts.
