How Can I Address Drooping Eyelids?

If you have drooping eyelids, you can correct the issue with eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty. This cosmetic procedure involves removing some of the excess tissue immediately above the eyes to make them look brighter and wider.

As individuals get older, the tissue above the eye begins to lose its elasticity. When this happens, the eyelid can start drooping over the eyeball, making the eyes look less open and vibrant. Blepharoplasty is a surgical cosmetic procedure that Dr. Lawton uses to correct this problem, restoring a more youthful aesthetic.

About Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty surgery usually begins by making a small incision in the upper eyelid just below the lashes in your eye’s natural crease. Dr. Lawton then removes and redistributes fat, muscle, and skin tissue to recontour the area. In severe cases where the drooping sags as far as the pupil, she may carry out a ptosis procedure which involves adding artificial support to the eyebrow muscle.

If you have bags under your eyes or a drooping lower eyelid, blepharoplasty can address that too. Dr. Lawton makes an incision just inside the lower lid and then adjusts the tissue to create the desired aesthetic.

Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure, meaning that you will need to spend some time recovering in a recovery room afterward to avoid complications. Usually, however, you are able to leave the clinic on the same day and complete your recuperation at home. Following surgery, you may find that you are more sensitive to light. You may also experience watering eyes, numbness, puffiness, or bruising. These responses are normal and should subside quickly as your body heals.

Benefits of an Upper Eyelid Lifts

Dr. Lawton identifies several benefits of upper eyelid lifts, including:

  • Less puffiness around the eyes: Aging and excess tissue around the eyes can make them appear puffy. Blepharoplasty removes the offending skin, fat, and muscle in a way that makes them look less swollen.
  • Less fatigued look: Drooping skin around the eyes can also make you look fatigued, even if you sleep well. Blepharoplasty stops the eyes from drooping, making you look bright-eyed and well-rested.
  • Enhanced field of vision: Severe eyelid drooping can impede your field of vision. Blepharoplasty and ptosis remove unwanted tissue occluding the light traveling to your eyes.
  • Enhanced confidence: Living with drooping eyelids can harm your confidence, especially in social situations. Blepharoplasty changes the appearance of your eyes and helps make them look brighter and more open.

Am I a Candidate for an Eyelid Lift?

Eyelid surgery primarily deals with the effects of aging and gravity. It helps to reverse that “tired” appearance that many patients get as they get older.

Good candidates for this procedure typically have excess skin around their upper eyelids that appears to fold over itself, distorting the natural, youthful shape of the eye. Please note, though, that blepharoplasty cannot deal with other causes of tired-looking eyes, such as sunken eyes or pigmentation.
