Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures — and it’s one with very high satisfaction rates — but there still are a number of myths surrounding implants and their impact on a woman’s health.
Any woman considering breast augmentation, or any cosmetic procedure, should discuss all concerns with their doctor and ensure that they are basing their decision on accurate information. Here are some of the prevailing questions women have about breast implants:
Will implants cause breast cancer?
According to the Susan G. Komen organization, which raises funds to fight breast cancer, implants do not appear to increase this risk. The organization notes that the FDA is examining a possible link between breast implants and a slightly increased risk of a very rare immune-system cancer that occurs in breast tissue in about 3 of 100 million women.
The FDA does not recommend removing implants because of this.
Can I still get a mammogram?
Yes, but because implants can obscure the view, seek a clinic where radiologists are experienced in both performing and reading mammograms of these patients. They typically obtain special views along with the standard images in order to evaluate your tissue more effectively. And make sure you inform the clinic that you have breast implants — both when making your appointment and when you arrive.
Will they rupture?
It is very rare for breast implants to rupture, but they can — and one cause can be surgical error. That’s why it’s so important to select a plastic surgeon who has the experience and credentials to handle your breast augmentation correctly, such as Dr. Tenley Lawton.
Can I breastfeed with implants?
It is absolutely possible to breastfeed after having breast augmentation surgery, although it is not guaranteed. As every woman and every procedure is different, in rare instances some patients find they cannot — but most are able to nurse without issue.
Am I too old for implants?
Probably not! Depending on your overall health, which is a consideration before any medical procedure, breast augmentation can be done at any age.
