Breast Augmentation Overview

Breast augmentation is a procedure designed for women whose breasts are smaller than they would like or have lost volume following pregnancy.

Board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Tenley Lawton performs this surgery by making a small incision under the breast crease (the lower fold of the breast) to create a pocket. She then inserts an implant into the newly-created space, between the natural breast tissue and the underlying chest muscle.

Dr. Lawton offers both silicone and saline implants. Silicone implants are currently the most popular type because of their remarkably natural feel and high durability. However, patients also consider saline implants because they contain many of the same materials already found naturally in the body.

Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a significant surgical procedure that materially changes the size and shape of your breasts, ultimately improving how they appear if you are not happy with them.

Suitable candidates for breast augmentation are women who:

  • Are generally health
  • Have an average BMI, preferably under 27
  • Do not smoke
  • Are willing to follow a healthy lifestyle following surgical intervention

Benefits of Breast Augmentation

The benefits of breast augmentation can be extraordinary. They include:

  • Increased confidence: Breast augmentation lets you determine how full and large your breasts appear.
  • Achieve your figure goals: Surgery may also help you achieve the hip-bust ratio you’ve always wanted.
  • Correct breast size and shape issues: Augmentation can remedy problems with uneven and asymmetric breasts, and make them appear more proportional to the hips, waist and chest.
  • Achieve dramatic results: Finally, augmentation achieves results that you never imagined were possible, letting you remake your figure in a way that suits you.

About Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast augmentation is major surgery. Therefore, patients should set several weeks aside for recovery.

Dr. Lawton performs surgeries as an outpatient procedure, meaning that your recovery will take place at home, so long as there are no complications. However, you will not be able to drive yourself home, so somebody you trust (usually a family member) will need to come to the surgery with you.

For the first 24 hours post-surgery, you’ll need somebody to stay by your side to check you are okay. Then, for the following one to two weeks, you’ll need to restrict your activities. Walking gently around your home is okay, but you shouldn’t do anything more vigorous than that.

After around a week or so, you may be able to return to work. And after two weeks, you should be able to bring more strenuous activities back into your routine. However, you should always listen to your body. Becoming active too soon could interrupt the healing process.
