Am I a Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Have you been considering a breast lift but are unsure if you’re a candidate for this procedure? Healthy women with realistic expectations about surgery’s ability to improve their breasts’ appearance are the best candidates for breast lift surgery. Women with smaller breasts are likely to enjoy longer-lasting results than those with heavier, more pendulous breasts.

Breast Lift Overview

A breast lift (sometimes called a mastopexy) is a procedure that seeks to augment the breasts’ shape and position by removing excessively stretched skin. Dr. Tenley Lawton – an Orange County Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon – specializes in restoring breast tissue in a way that looks natural, ensuring that it makes visual sense in the context of the rest of your body.

The procedure can include many elements, including reducing the size of the areola (the area around the nipple), contouring the breast tissue, and, in some cases, inserting small implants to enhance fullness and volume.

As a patient, you determine the course your breast lift takes. Dr. Lawton will consult in-depth about the types of interventions available and the results you’d like to achieve. The goal is to reverse the effects of gravity and aging and sculpt breasts that reclaim your youthful form.

Benefits of a Breast Lift

Many women come to our clinic lacking confidence because of the shape and appearance of their breasts. Breast lifts are a way of improving sagging and lack of symmetry. Here are some of the benefits of the procedure.

  • Reduced irritation under the breasts. Sagging creates a fold of skin between the bottom of the breast and the torso. For some women, this causes mild irritation. Mastopexy seeks to eliminate the excess skin that produces chafing, thereby improving comfort.
  • More attractive breast shape. Aging, genetics, and hormonal changes can all alter the shape and size of your breasts. While some of these changes might be welcome, many are not. Breast lift is an opportunity for you to sculpt breasts that makes you feel more confident about your body.
  • Better nipple projection. Some breasts have issues with nipple projection. They either droop or don’t extend far enough. When Dr. Lawton reshapes the breasts, she intervenes in the structures that support the nipples, helping them protrude from the breast tissue in a forward (rather than downward) manner.
  • More youthful appearance. Both pregnancy and aging can cause breasts to lose their youthful appearance. Fortunately, breast lift procedures can help you recover their original size and shape – and potentially improve on it.
  • Firmer appearance. Breasts can sometimes appear saggy or “deflated.” Breast lifts can also incorporate additional support that makes the tissue appear firmer and rounder.

Is a Breast Lift Right for Me?

Whether a breast lift is right for you depends on several factors. It helps if you can maintain a stable weight. As weight fluctuates, so does the size and shape of the breasts, affecting results. Furthermore, women who don’t smoke are generally better candidates for the procedure than those who don’t.
