Are you a good candidate for plastic surgery?

A cosmetic procedure performed by an expert, such as Dr. Tenley Lawton in Newport Beach, can improve your life by changing a characteristic or condition that affects your self-image.

However, not everyone is a good candidate for surgery. Patients need to be clear on why they want this change, and what impact they expect the surgery to have. One common trap that prospective patients fall into is hoping that their procedure won’t only change them, but also that it will create changes in the behavior of those around them.

The only consideration that truly matters (aside from medical concerns, of course) is what a cosmetic procedure will do for you. With that in mind, here are some guidelines from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to help you determine if plastic surgery might be right for you.

Good candidates for plastic surgery

  • Patients who have a strong self-image already, but have a physical characteristic that they want to change.
  • Patients with a physical characteristic that has affected their self-image over time, who feel that improving this characteristic will also improve their self-image.

Inappropriate candidates for plastic surgery

  • Patients going through difficult life changes, such as a divorce. Someone who has recently experienced a traumatic life event, for example, the death of a spouse or loss of a job, should work through the issues related to their crisis before considering plastic surgery. A cosmetic procedure won’t ease those underlying issues.
  • Someone obsessed with minor imperfections, or a patient with unrealistic expectations. Patients should understand that there are limits to what can be achieved by even the best plastic surgeons using today’s advanced techniques.
  • Patients who are hoping to cure a problem that is primarily (or entirely) mental, instead of physical. These people typically consult with many surgeons, looking for answers that may not be possible.

The ultimate goal of plastic surgery is not to “fix” issues or create “perfection” — it’s to bring out the best in each patient, and help them lead a life with greater self-esteem. If this is your goal, too, contact board-certified and renowned Orange County surgeon Dr. Lawton today.
